Supplements for Sleep Disorder

One of the most popular treatments for any sleep disorder symptom is the hormonal supplement melatonin, a hormone secreted by the pineal gland, which is located in the brain. This hormone is known to regulate a person's sleep cycle. Although scientists are yet to find out what makes melatonin work the way it does, the experts admit that melatonin indeed has a calming effect on people, and make them sleep more soundly.

A study has found that it is beneficial in the regulation of sleep patterns. The results also said that almost all of the subjects in the study were able to develop normal sleep patterns after they took melatonin supplements. According to experts, the best time to take melatonin supplements and the dosage to take is dependent on the type of sleep disorder. Experts also caution against taking too much melatonin supplements to avoid worsening one's sleeping problems.

Another type of supplement designed to fight any sleep disorder symptom is valerian. According to a study, valerian is one of the two most widely used insomnia treatments, next to melatonin. The study discovered that valerian use was greater in individuals under the age of 60. The use of the supplements by these particular individuals was made under guidance from a health care professional less than half of the time.
